New to Speed Skating?
Having the proper equipment is an integral part of the sport of speed skating. Purchasing equipment can be an arduous task if you are new to the sport. Please refer to our equipment website page.
Equipment can be purchased through the Oval Skate Shop at the University of Calgary Olympic Oval, please contact the Skate Shop at email@example.com or at (403) 220-7917. Another great resource is www.ilovespeedskating.com. Also, Many of our members sell their gently used equipment through our Classified link on the CSSA website.
First Day of Program:
What to expect on the first day of programs:
- Come early…
- Bring your VOLUNTEER CHEQUES!
- Pick up your Oval Ice pass. (If you are new, then you will need to get your photo taken for your pass.)
- Pick up your parking pass.
- No volunteer cheques, no passes, no exceptions!
“NEW” Volunteer Policy:
Like all sports organizations, CSSA relies heavily on volunteers to successfully meet the needs of the sport. Members of CSSA are required to volunteer each season. Each skating member is required to provide 20 hours of volunteer service during the season. For a family with more than one skater, each additional skater adds 10 volunteer hours to a maximum of 40 volunteer hours.
Skating members are required to commit at least 5 hours of their volunteer requirements to CSSA’s two sanctioned meets – ABLT and RUFAst.
Most volunteer hours can be completed by an associate member (parent/guardian for skating members under 18) or the skating member. Casino volunteer hours can be completed by any adult representative of a skating member.
- CSSA members who skate with other programs, such as the Oval Pathway, and do not use any CSSA ice times are encouraged to volunteer.
- L2SS skaters (or their parents) are required to complete 5 hours of volunteering.
- Uncoached adult skaters are required to complete 10 hours of volunteering.
Volunteer Deposit Cheques
Members are required to provide a $500 volunteer cheque for 1 skater, or a $700 volunteer cheque for 2 or more skaters in a CSSA program. L2SS skating members and uncoached adult skating members are required to provide a $350 volunteer cheque.
Members now have the option of splitting their volunteer cheques:
- $500 = cheque #1 = $375 plus cheque #2 = $125 OR
- $700 = cheque #1 = $525 plus cheque #2 = $175
Please refer to our website page for the entire policy. http://calgaryspeedskating.ca/volunteer-requirements1617/
Parent and Skater Guide:
CSSA has developed a Parent and Skater Guide. This Guide is an introductory resource to be used by parents and/or skaters. This guide reviews the following:
- Expectations of the coach, skater and parent
- Rules of the Olympic Oval
- “NEW” CSSA Volunteer policy
- Equipment and Equipment Maintenance
- Competitions and Meets
This guide is meant to supplement other information provided by the Club through various other mediums like emails, notices, and website updates. Access your guide: http://calgaryspeedskating.ca/parent-and-skater-guide/
CSSA’s Technical Director will design a training plan, create training groups and assign coaches to groups. If you have any questions regarding your training program, please contact us!
The schedule is posted! You can find it under the SKATERS tab, under the fall programs menu.
Saturday, September 17, 2016, 12:00pm-3:00pm
We have invited a special guest speaker for our female skaters and a special guest for our male skaters; at the same time our Board of Directors will be welcoming parents to the 2016-2017 season. We will take this opportunity to update you on the upcoming season and answer your questions. This will be followed by an Equipment talk and a Nutrition talk for all members. At the conclusion of our afternoon there will be a BBQ and games for all.
RAMP – SSC-MMS – WAIVERS
Online registration is a 3 PART process. What does that mean? Why is it different?
Late last season Speed Skating Canada implemented a new online database. In order to ensure that your information is correct and current, it is up to each member to update his or her own information. We have made this transition as easy as possible by ensuring that the programs listed in SSC-MMS have the same name as RAMP. For parents/guardians/volunteers of CSSA skaters under 18, you must also be registered in SSC-MMS. Please ensure that you choose “FM” for Family Membership, this coincides with the “FM” in RAMP.
We have updated and reduced the number of waivers made available for our members. Please refer to our website for the updated instructions. Waivers must be completed prior to any on-ice activities!
If you have not completed all three parts, you will be contacted.
Why is fundraising important? The key to fundraising is to reduce the costs of running the club. CSSA is looking to increase fundraising revenue to reduce registration fees.
CO-OP Gift Cards:
Shop at Co-op? No, well it’s time to start! Everyone has to buy groceries so why not buy your groceries at Co-op and earn money for CSSA. Or use a Co-op gift card to buy gas, or liquor. For every $100 gift card, CSSA earns $10.50. Last season CSSA earned about $2,700, our goal this year is to reach $10,000. Gift cards make great “gifts” too. For more information or to order your cards, check out the website page: http://calgaryspeedskating.ca/co-op-cards/
World Cup Tickets:
Each year CSSA is offered the opportunity to sell World Cup tickets and in turn CSSA earns $10 for every ticket sold. This year tickets will be available online. Just enter the CSSA promo code and buy your ticket and CSSA will receive the funds. Share this promo code with your friends and family and CSSA earns even more! Information on this event and when ticket sales will be available will be updated on our website.
Wear your CSSA colours proud! Check out our online store where you can purchase clothes and items with the CSSA logo. A percentage of all CSSA sales is returned back to the club.
THANK YOU to the MANY volunteers that make our speed skating season possible. A huge THANK YOU from the over 200 skaters who benefit in countless ways from experiencing this great winter sport we call “Speed Skating”. The success of Calgary Speed Skating Association is a reflection of the ever-increasing dedication and enthusiasm our volunteers’ display on a continual basis. We thank you for your contribution of time to CSSA. Our success would not be realized without your involvement.
Casino – November 28 and 29, 2016:
CSSA requires approximately 40 volunteers for this year’s casino. Information is available on our casino website page. Sign up today! http://calgaryspeedskating.ca/volunteering/casino-2016/
In an effort to improve communications between CSSA and our families, we have developed the role of Team Manager for each of our groups. This volunteer role will be responsible for relaying important information to our members about upcoming events, fundraisers, and club communications. If you are interested in this role please contact our office.
Refer a Friend:
New this year! CSSA would like to thank you for your referral. If you refer a friend to join in this great sport of speed skating, each of you will receive $25 off of your registration fees. http://calgaryspeedskating.ca/referrals/
We have updated our website! Take a look! We’ve taken out obsolete pages, added pages, reorganized and updated pages. We hope that it’s easier to use and understand. It is a work in progress, so if you find something that needs attention, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Welcome to Calgary Speed Skating!
See you on the ice!
