at the Canada West Championship (CanWest) in Lethbridge, March 29-30, 2014.

The Canada West Short Track Championships are intended to be the focal point of athlete preparation for skaters in the Training to Train Stage of Development. The Training to Train Championships provide meaningful, high profile and developmentally appropriate end of season events which are a source of motivation and opportunity for recognition of the best developing skaters in Canada. These events will serve as primary introduction to national competitions where skaters represent their Branch in competition.

… is an opportunity that the Calgary Speed Skating Association (CSSA) offers to those who would like to experience the sport of Speed Skating at the Olympic Oval  before committing to the full season.

The cost of this program is $50 (non-refundable) and includes 2 group sessions with coach, the Oval ice passes and the rental of the skates (If size is available in our rental fleet of skates)




Kids group:
Age: 5 to 13 years old
Youth/Adults group:
Age: 14 to 85 years old

Required Safety Equipment


  • Comfortable sport clothing that provides full coverage. No Jeans.
  • Speed Skating Helmet (LAS or Louis Garneau), CSA Hockey Helmet, CSA Snowboard/Ski Helmet, or CSA Skateboard Helmet.
  • Cut-resistant gloves.
  • Hard plastic soccer shin guards.
  • Volleyball type foam knee pads (kids)

Strongly recommended safety equipment:

  • Volleyball type foam knee pads.
  • Neck guard with padded bib.
  • Sport or corrective lens glasses held by a strap or a complete visor.

We would like to thank our Speed Skating community who by pulling together helped this event come alive and provide a great end of the season 13-14 event for many skaters who are already looking forward to next season.

On behalf of CSSA I would like to congratulate all 257 Skaters (ages 5 to 75), from 19 different clubs, that participated at the RU Fast meet this past weekend Feb. 28th to March 2nd. 51 medals were earned and we witnessed many PBs during these two and a half days of excitement on two ice surfaces where skaters had a great opportunity to showcase all the skill acquired during the season and the improvements in racing strategies. We should all be proud of this generation of speed skaters that are working their way up the pyramid on this part of the country. CONGRATULATIONS!


To the Coaches, thank you for believing in your skaters and being attentive and inspiring. Your dedication to your skaters keeps them engaged to their sport as no one else can. You are such an important part in their love for the sport. Keep up the great job that you are doing.

To the Officials, thank you for your time and involvement in the sport of Speed Skating, for the fairness of your calls and for keeping it safe for all the participants. Thank you for mentoring the next generation of Officials that will ensure the continuity of our beautiful sport.

To the CSSA and out of town Volunteers (162) and Parents, a heartfelt thank you for your time and your support, for lending us some competition items (Banff/Canmore), for getting involved and desire to learn about the sport, for your kindness and your smiles , you were the engine that made this a wonderful event. Skaters and the whole speed skating community is very grateful for your involvement! THANK YOU, you have touched many lives!!!!

To the Olympic Oval Staff, thank you very much for getting involved with the planning and organization of the set up and technical support, your help, advice and presence during the event were key factors in the flow and success on the two ice surfaces. For keeping safe and longer than expected the borrowed mats. You are the Best!!!

To AASSA and Speed Skating Canada thank you for the sanctions, for your efforts in promoting the Sport of Speed Skating in Alberta and for your constant presence and support at all levels to continue developing our next generation of successful skaters, coaches, officials and volunteers. Together we are making dreams come true!

To Vincent De Haïtre, Denny Morrison, Anastasia Bucsis, Gilmore Junio and Lucas Makowsky, members of the Canadian Long Track Olympic Team, thank you for taking time of your very busy schedules to sign autographs, take pictures and present the medals with such big smiles and encouraging words. It was a pleasure to have you join us at this event where we are forging the next generation of world class speed skaters that look up to you as their inspiration, you are great sport role models for perseverance and team spirit. THANK YOU!!!!

The Calgary Speed Skating Association would like to express how proud we are of our alumni Gilmore Junio, competing at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. He has done a remarkable act of real Team Spirit making this world a better place.

We have seen Gilmore grow in this sport, the endless hours of training, the sacrifices of juggling family, studies, social and the love for his sport, we saw him come back from injuries and change from short track to long track, we have followed him through his successes, we saw him give it all to make it to the Olympics and all this with a smile, always available to give back to the sport that he loves, and now he gave, he gave a dream to a Team mate, the dream of his life, and together they made history today.

Gilmore, you have given the world a lesson in humility, and a  lesson of what real Team Spirit is all about!  The CSSA is proud of you and wishes for you in your life the same kindness that you have shown others with that big heart and smile of yours.


To Denny Morrison, thank you for stepping up to the challenge and making Gilmore live his dream through your skating, CONGRATULATIONS on your Silver Olympic  Medal, you were awesome!!!
